Aparigraha: Not Grasping

Writer: sageyogabathsageyogabath

Aparigraha is the fifth Yama. The Yamas are ethical principles, which make up the first limb of yoga. The Eight Limbs of Yoga are seen as the foundation of yoga philosophy and were written by the sage Patanjali around 500 BC in the Yoga Sutras.

What does aparigraha mean?

A = not

Gra = grasp

This teaching tells us not to hold onto things too tightly; to let go.

Our yoga practice this week focusses on this fifth yama. You will notice that we will practice lots of twists, to detoxify the body, mind and emotions; twisting helps us to let go. We will also practice Ganesha Mudra, which is seen as the remover of obstacles. Surrendering is aided through some long hold poses, that support a connection to the heart, such as supine twist and supine baddha konasana. Our practice will finish with a beautiful poem about letting go, on which to meditate.
